Final Clavey River Watershed Action Plan Completed

Clavey River Watershed Action Plan - This is a 9 MB file. Please download before opening. To download, right click and “Save as.”

Members of the Clavey River Watershed community joined forces to develop a plan for the Watershed. Working together, they produced a roadmap for future stewardship projects such as campground improvements, streambed and meadow restoration and noxious weed control. These projects will contribute to preserving one of California's most ecologically healthy watersheds for both human and natural communities to enjoy.

The watershed planning effort was led by the Clavey Watershed Council--a collection of stakeholders who collaboratively guided the planning process--with the assistance of the Tuolumne River Trust and input from community members and technical experts. The Watershed Plan builds on the results of the recently released Clavey River Watershed Assessment that provides an expanded scientific foundation for management decisions in the watershed. The Watershed Plan will improve watershed management capacity by rigorously evaluating stewardship projects for future implementation feasibility. Projects chosen for inclusion in the Watershed Plan vary in scope, size and location. This will enable the community to choose from a variety of opportunities to participate in implementing future Watershed stewardship projects, as time and funding allow.

The planning process took over a year to complete. The Clavey River is a component of the Bay Delta Watershed and system, the planning process was generously funded by the CALFED Bay-Delta Watershed Program.

Clavey Watershed Demonstration Projects

Over the course of the next year, the Clavey Watershed Council and the Tuolumne River Trust have the opportunity to implement three to four small pilot projects. These projects have been identified in advance of the Watershed Plan and will serve as test cases for similar projects to be included in the final Plan. The success of each of the following pilot projects will depend in part on public support and the contributions of volunteers dedicated to stewardship in the Clavey River Watershed. New volunteers are always welcome. To become involved in any of the pilot projects, contact Galen Weston or Rebecca Cremeen at the Tuolumne River Trust, (209) 588-8636.

Potential Pilot Projects:

Development and installation of interpretive displays at Bourland Trestle—a significant heritage resource within the Watershed.

Development and installation of interpretive displays at Bell Meadows Research Natural Area—the largest quaking aspen stand in the Central and Southern Sierra.

Trail Rehabilitation in Bell Meadows to repair a ¼ mile section of trail causing erosion and soil loss into Bell Creek.

Development of a Clavey River educational poster to highlight special features, species and locations of interest in the watershed.
